In a $15 million lawsuit, she said a teenager broke her teeth and jaw when her Citi Bike's brakes went out and it crashed into the entrance railing of a Brooklyn subway station.
Akela Williams, of Trinidad, was injured Aug. 15 while riding her bicycle along Eastern Parkway toward Nostrand Avenue in Crown Heights.
The night started innocently enough.
Akela, 16, and her mother, Kiara Williams, rented bikes from a bike-sharing hub at Eastern Parkway and Ralph Avenue around 10:10 a.m. for a group ride to the nearby Brooklyn Museum. I was with family and friends. this afternoon, the family said in court documents.
About 30 minutes later, on the way home, Akela tried to slow down on a steep hill on Eastern Parkway as he approached Nostrand Avenue and tried to use his legs when his brakes failed, according to filings in Brooklyn federal court. .
“The bicycle lost control and the bicycle and Mr. Williams crashed into a railing,” according to court documents.
The family is suing Citi Bike, the operator of the Citi Bike system, and Lyft Bikes and Scooters LLC for negligence.
Their attorney did not return messages.
