The U.S. Postal Service may have found a way to unite a country bitterly divided after this month's election. Betty White stamps were released.
The popular actor, known for his roles on “The Golden Girls,” “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and “Boston Legal,” will be featured on the 2025 Forever stamp, the USPS announced Friday.
White passed away in late December 2021, less than three weeks shy of his 100th birthday. The Postal Service has not announced the release date for the stamps.
“American television icon Betty White (1922-2021) shared her wit and warmth with viewers for 70 years,” the Postal Service said in announcing the stamp. The stamp depicts a smiling White based on a 2010 photo by famed photographer Kwaku Alston. . “A comedic actor who found a younger audience in her 90s, she was also respected as a compassionate advocate for animals.”
Boston-based artist Dale Stefanos created the digital illustration from Alston's photo.
“I would like to write a letter to my 18-year-old self with this stamp on it and tell her everything will be okay,” Stefanos wrote on Facebook.
Regardless of their personal politics, self-proclaimed supporters of President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris reacted jubilantly on social media.
“Betty White has been my hero all my life! In fact, when I was little I had a doll I named Betty White,” one Trump supporter posted on X (formerly Twitter).
“To make this awful week a little better, I'm going to get a Betty White stamp,” a Harris X supporter's account posted.
White combined a wholesome image with a flare of vulgar jokes. Her television career began in the early 1950s and exploded as she got older.
“He's the only SNL host I've ever seen get a standing ovation at an afterparty,” Seth Meyers tweeted after his death. “A party where she ordered vodka and a hot dog and stayed until the end.''
