why? Glenn explains that this is because the system is corrupt and currently has little to do with America's health and more to do with lining the pockets of big corporations.
“When a food company goes to a group of well-known, trusted scientists and says, 'We need a study showing that yellow No. 5 is safe,' they say, 'Oh, we're going to do that study. It’s going to move forward.’ It’s about being fair and balanced and totally upbeat,” Glenn says.
“You seem skeptical,” Stu commented jokingly.
“Just like the people who benefit from that research, like me, are paying for the research. It's not neutral. The FDA was then informed of the results of that study and said, 'Yellow 5. My turn doesn’t matter,’” Glenn continues.
The FDA then approves the ingredient, but at a hefty cost.
“Half of the funding comes from the FDA and half of the budget comes from food and drug companies,” Glenn said.
“Let's say if you stopped it, the FDA's burden would be cut in half,” Stu comments.
“Yes,” Glenn replies. “I want less input from the FDA and an end to the revolving door and the obvious corruption that comes from money.”
