The United States on Wednesday vetoed a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
In the United States, there were 14 votes in favor and only one vote in favor.
U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield explained The United States claimed that it vetoed the resolution because it did not include the release of the 101 Israeli hostages as a condition.
Through negotiations, we have made it clear that we cannot support an unconditional ceasefire that fails to free the hostages.
For, as this Council has previously demanded, a permanent end to the war must come from the release of the hostages. These two urgent goals are closely related.
This resolution waived that need, so the United States could not support it.
Simply put, this resolution would send a dangerous message to Hamas: there is no need to return to the negotiating table.
The veto came as a relief to Israel, which has been wary of a lame-duck Biden-Harris administration for weeks. President Barack Obama used the lame duck period to allow anti-Israel resolutions to pass in the Security Council.
Earlier this year, the Biden-Harris administration allowed the passage of a flawed resolution that did not make hostage release a condition of a cease-fire, despite mentioning hostages.
