Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) thanked former Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz after he withdrew his candidacy for attorney general after the latter was nominated by President Donald Trump. .
Gaetz announced his withdrawal Thursday morning, prompting Trump and many others to thank him for his efforts in securing the Trump-Vance ticket.
“We are extremely grateful to Matt for his efforts in the nomination process,” Vance said. tweeted. “He made the decision to withdraw entirely out of respect for President Trump's administration. Matt is a patriot and we can't wait to see what he does next.”
Gaetz's announcement shocked Washington almost as much as his nomination itself. Since being nominated, he has been meeting with senators and moving forward full speed ahead with plans for his term leading the Justice Department.
“I had a great meeting with the senators yesterday,” Gaetz said. tweeted. “I am grateful for their thoughtful feedback and the incredible support of so many people. Although momentum was strong, my confirmation unfairly stood in the way of the important work of the Trump-Vance transition. It is clear that I have no time to waste on unnecessary protracted Washington brawls, so I am withdrawing my name from the running for attorney general.”
He continued, “Trump's Justice Department must be staffed and ready from day one. I remain committed to making sure Donald J. Trump is the most successful president in history.” said. I will forever be honored that President Trump has nominated me to lead the Department of Justice, and I am confident that he will save America. ”
