The fallout from former Florida Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz withdrawing his candidacy for U.S. attorney general on Thursday is still being sorted out, but one CNN analyst says both he and the president-elect won this round. states.
When President-elect Donald Trump announced last week that Gaetz would be his top law enforcement officer, many people flinched, especially in the wake of allegations about sex trafficking of minors. Members of the House Ethics Committee said Wednesday they were unable to reach an agreement to release a report on the allegations.
“In any case, he now has the support of the MAGA community who think it's just Democrats and people who hate Donald Trump trying to bring Matt Gaetz down.”
After Gaetz announced his withdrawal, CNN political analyst Mark Preston said: reiterated his claim President Trump and the Florida congressman will win no matter what happens with his nomination.
“I'm a conspiracy theorist on this,” Preston said, and his fellow CNN panelists laughed.
“No, it really is! So this is how I think it will play out,” he continued. “I think Matt Gaetz is on the plane. He came up with this idea because he's a candidate for attorney general. He knows this House report is going to be released in the next few days. Right? In any case, he now has the support of the Attorney General.'' The MAGA community thinks Democrats and Donald Trump haters are just trying to bring Matt Gaetz down.
“Even if they succeed in doing so, Matt Gaetz will become an outcast in the community once that report is released anyway, but he has already established a following.” [of the MAGA community]. Or if he gets through it, Donald Trump will get what he wants? ” says Preston.
He went on to say that it doesn't really matter who President Trump appoints to the Justice Department, as long as they do what Trump wants.
“It doesn't have to be Matt Gaetz. It could be Matt Thompson or Matt Barnes. It could be any Matt!” he joked.
Preston posted a video of his comments about Gates' strategy to his social media accounts. He also warned about Republican senators who declined to nominate him.
“Trump — not to mention his supporters — is keeping the scorecard…There are only so many times Republican senators can defy Trump before he turns on the fire hydrant.” preston I wrote.
Mr. Gates vehemently denied all allegations leveled against him.
