One Indian immigrant testified that he smuggled more than 500 Indians across the U.S.-Canada border over a four-year period. Despite earning more than $400,000 for his role in the smuggling operation, the man will be allowed to remain and work in the United States in exchange for his testimony.
Rajinder Singh, 51, testified that he took part in a people-smuggling scheme to bring more than 500 Indian migrants across the northern border of the United States, the Associated Press reported. Singh said the migrants paid up to $100,000 each to travel along the smuggling route that runs from India's Gujarat state to the U.S.-Canadian border.
Singh, who was previously convicted for his role in the human smuggling network, took the stand in Minnesota last week and testified against the network's alleged leaders. Harshkumar Ramanlal Patel29, and Steve ShandAccording to the Associated Press, the 50-year-old resident of Florida. Prosecutors allege Patel recruited Shand to run part of the smuggling operation, driving a group of migrants across the Canadian border to Hulin, Minnesota, over a four-week period.
Singh himself entered the United States illegally three times after being deported on federal charges, according to the Associated Press. He says he testifies because it's the right thing to do.
Questions from Mr. Patel's lawyers questioned Mr. Singh's virtue and said he was testifying to avoid further deportation. The Associated Press said Sain's deportation will be postponed and he will be issued a work permit.
Indian immigrants travel to Canada on student visas and are then smuggled into Washington state from British Columbia. In 2021, the plan was to have migrants cross into Minnesota instead.
This led to four Indian migrants allegedly freezing to death in January 2022, the Associated Press reported. The victims are listed as: 39-year-old Jagdish Patel. His wife Vaishaliben was in her mid-30s. My 11 year old daughter Vihangi. and 3-year-old son Dalmik.
Singh said one of his fellow smugglers told him in a panic: “Our work has been ruined. People have been captured.'' Singh said he later learned of the deaths of his Indian family.
“They are playing with people's lives,” Singh said of the smugglers. “People died,” the Associated Press said.
