“If we want to stop the hot phase of the war, we should take the following steps.” [the] NATO includes the territory of Ukraine that we control,” Zelenskyy said through an interpreter in an interview. sky news on friday.
“That's what we need to do quickly so Ukraine can diplomatically regain other parts of its territory.”
This comes after President Zelenskiy was adamant that the fighting continue until Ukraine is returned to its internationally recognized borders, including Crimea.
In 2022, President Vladimir Putin annexed four regions of Ukraine – Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia, calling them “eternal peoples” – a move condemned by Western leaders.
Zelenskiy suggested that the “NATO umbrella”, while not full membership, which Putin rejected, could mean that member states would provide more individual security for Ukraine.
Zelenskiy did not say whether he would be willing to give up more territory in exchange for full NATO membership.
“No one has proposed to us that only part of Ukraine or different regions should join NATO,” he said. He added:[it] It might be possible, but no one suggested it. ”
He seemed skeptical, saying that other countries have offered to broker a cease-fire agreement between the two countries, but that it is necessary to guarantee that “President Putin will not come back.”
“We need [NATO protection] very, otherwise [Putin] “I'll be back,” he said. “Otherwise, how will we get to a ceasefire? So for us, it's very dangerous.”
Meanwhile, President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to end the war between Russia and Ukraine, a move that Putin and Zelenskyy said they welcomed.
Zelenskiy's comments come after Ukraine fired eight long-range, U.S.-supplied missiles at Russia, several of which hit an ammunition supply site, a notable shift in the more than two-year war. It was announced just one week after.
“All our partners always seek permission from the United States,” Zelenskiy said. fox news last week. “If the United States doesn't make concessions, Europe won't either.”
