South Korean president declares martial law in move against opposition party

South Korean President Yun Seok-Yeol on Tuesday condemned the rebels' “anti-national” activities and declared martial law.

In an unannounced speech broadcast live late at night on YTN, Yoon said he had no choice but to take drastic measures to protect South Korea's freedom and constitutional order. He said the opposition was holding the parliamentary process hostage to plunge the country into crisis.

“I declare martial law to protect the free Republic of Korea from the threat of the North Korean communist army, to eradicate the despicable pro-North Korean anti-national forces that are plundering the freedom and happiness of the people, and to protect the free constitution. Please place your order,” Yun said.
