I’ll Have to Work Directly with Trump to Get DREAMer Deal, ‘Be Sensitive to His Priorities’

On Wednesday's broadcast of CNN's “Inside Politics,” Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said he and then-President Donald Trump reached an agreement on DREAMers during Trump's first term. He said he learned a lesson from his failed attempt to tie the knot. He knows that “to get a deal, we have to work directly with President-elect Trump, and we have to be sensitive not only to our own priorities, but also to President-elect Trump's priorities.”

Durbin said [relevant remarks begin around 22:05] He said he has not yet discussed the president-elect's comments about Dreamers with the Trump transition team, but he expects they will discuss the candidates and bring up the issue at that time. Host Dana Bash then asked, “You actually came pretty close to this, I think it was in 2018. Are there any lessons we can take from that going forward?”

Durbin replied: “Oh, I learned some things, but I'm not going to repeat everything at this point. We need to work directly with President-elect Trump to get an agreement, and we need to be sensitive to his priorities as well as our own.” But I think what he said last Sunday is that there is room for dialogue.''
