Christmas gift of new bionic arms helps children live fuller, happier lives

This December, three children are feeling pure joy over the “world's best Christmas present.”

This week, Etty Baker, 8, Zoe Hampton-Pigeon, 8, and Finn Jarvis, 11, were given “life-changing” bionic arms courtesy of the Baker 3 Campaign.

The campaign, set up by a mother named Sarah Rocky whose own daughter faced physical hardship, will help families of children who have lost limbs raise money for bionic weapons. Company SWNS reported.

Ettie Baker's mother Alice said her daughter “screamed” when she found out about her new arm this Christmas.

“Ettie has always shown great love for her differences and loves to celebrate them,” her mother, Alyse Baker, said of her daughter.

But as the child grew up, “he became more and more aware of how different he was,” the mother said.

The Hero Arm is for people with discrepancies from the elbow to the lower leg.

The Open Bionics Foundation, which provides financial support to people in need of multi-grip upper limb prostheses, as well as The Worshipful Company of the Grovers, Foresight Group and an anonymous donor, will have donated more than $50,000 for their new bionic arm, SWNS reported. .

It is considered “the world's most affordable advanced multi-grip prosthetic hand.”

The Open Bionics Foundation says on its website that the Hero Arm is for people who live with disabilities from the elbow down to the lower leg.

Most of the funds raised so far have come from three families working together on this project.

The family learned that their daughter was born with a limb difference during a 20-week test.

The father said: “It was a very scary and emotional time, not knowing what was going to happen… When Zoe was born, she saw several specialists, but there were no answers as to why this was happening. No… it’s just one of those things that happens.”

He today described his daughter as “a very happy, caring, confident and adventurous little girl.”

She says she is “always on the go.” She is a member of the gymnastics club, takes swimming lessons and loves trampolines.

His father said he is looking forward to learning to jump rope with his new arms.

Mother Sarah Lockie was inspired to launch the campaign, now in its fourth year, after her daughter lost her hand to meningitis when she was just 15 months old.

Mr Rocky said the campaign would help take some of the stress out of crowdfunding for families.
