A police officer and the suspected gunman were killed in a gunfight Saturday afternoon after police chased a “suspicious” man who had been reported lurking in a neighborhood in Tennessee.
of Tennessee Bureau of Investigation identified the slain officer as Rick Finley, a part-time officer with the Selmer Police Department and a full-time deputy with the McNairy County Sheriff's Office. Officials said Finley was shot to death by 39-year-old Daniel Holmes, who was then shot to death by Finley's co-workers.
Officers responded to a call reporting a “suspicious person” outside a residence in Selmer, Tennessee, around 3 p.m. Holmes allegedly wandered around the neighborhood trying to break into a home and fired multiple shots into the front door. Traumatic brain injury.
Holmes then fled the scene and was found one street over by responding police officers, including Finley. He opened fire on officers and shot Finley multiple times, killing him, according to the TBI.

Officer Lt. Ron Pilkington, who had responded to the scene after Finley, arrived quickly and was “able to return fire, killing the suspect,” the agency said.
The TBI is investigating the shooting.
