AP News Police said initial reports that the gunman was 17 years old were incorrect.
Madison Police Chief Sean Burns said Rapnow has been identified as the suspect who opened fire inside the study hall at Abundant Life Christian School on Monday.
Burns said Rapnow was found with a “self-inflicted gunshot wound” and died on the way to the hospital.
Burns said police were searching Rapnow's home and spoke with her father and other family members who were assisting authorities with the investigation. Out of respect for his family, he declined to provide further information about the shooter.
“He lost someone, too,” Burns said of Rapnow's father. “So we're not going to rush the information. We're going to take our time and make sure we do our due diligence.”
He also said Rapnow used a handgun in the shooting and that police have not yet determined a motive for the attack.
“I don't know the reason, but I feel like if I knew the reason, I would be able to prevent this from happening,” he told reporters.
The identities of the instructor and student who died in the incident remain unknown, and police have not released their names.
Burns said two of the six people injured in the incident were students and were in critical condition. Three students and a teacher were also hospitalized with minor injuries. Two of them were later released.
Burns also said he doesn't believe schools have resource officers. Additionally, although the school did not have metal detectors, it did have surveillance cameras and other emergency procedures.
