Trump to restart family detention, worksite raids as part of mass deportation strategy: Homan

President-elect Donald Trump's incoming border czar, Tom Homan, has revealed further details about his administration's mass deportation strategy.

In an interview with washington post In his announcement Thursday, Homan said his administration plans to reintroduce family detention and workplace raids.

“We cannot afford to lose the trust of the American people.”

The Biden administration ended family detention in 2021 and repurposed or closed the few Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities designed to provide dormitory-like accommodations for undocumented immigrants with children.

Additionally, a federal judge has ruled that minors can remain in family detention facilities for up to the maximum length of time. 20 days only. This restriction, combined with slow deportation procedures, hampers ICE's ability to remove families with children.

Under the Biden administration, the agency has prioritized deporting illegal aliens who can be more easily removed.

Homan told the Post he believes President Trump can speed up the deportation process and pointed to the need for the administration to build family detention centers.

“The number of beds we need depends on what the data says,” Homan said.

“Here's the problem,” he said. “You knew you were in the country illegally and you chose to have a child. That's why you put your family in that position.”

Homan explained that families have the option of being deported together or separated, with those legally in the U.S. remaining and others able to leave the country. .

“We need to show the American people that this is not inhumane and that we can do this,” he told the Post. “We cannot lose the trust of the American people.”

Homan reiterated that the mass deportation plan would be a “targeted” campaign aimed at illegal aliens who have committed additional crimes in the United States.

“I don't believe this is a sweep and the military is patrolling the neighborhood,” he added.

Homan also noted that the administration plans to reinstate work site raids that President Joe Biden abolished.

“We haven't really developed a plan for enforcement on the ground,” he said. “I know employers will be upset.”

Homan vowed to launch another mission to find missing children in the care of minimally vetted sponsors in the United States.

“Some of these children will be engaged in forced labor, and some will be engaged in the sex industry,” Homan told the Post. “I think some people are perfectly fine. We just want to make sure.”

He explained that parents who brought their children to the United States illegally should be subject to deportation proceedings.

“I'm not saying detain them,” he said. “We let them pick up the child and do legal proceedings with the child so they can go to court and file a case as a family.”
