New York City is plagued by violent crime on its streets and on public transportation, a problem exacerbated by the surge in undocumented immigrants entering the country without shelter. Mayor Eric Adams has repeatedly expressed frustration with the federal government, claiming the city lacks the resources to care for them.

An estimated 220,000 immigrants have entered New York City since April 2022, with more than 58,000 currently being cared for by New York City taxpayers, according to a City Hall report.
