Florida Man Shoots at Two Migrants in Alleged Home Invasion, One Died

A Florida homeowner opened fire on two immigrants who broke into his home Thursday night. One of the migrants, a Mexican national, died from multiple gunshot wounds.

Manatee County Sheriff Rick Wells told reporters that sheriff's deputies responded to a call about a shooting related to an alleged residential burglary. Homeowner says his home's surveillance camera alerted him to two masked men trying to break into his home (Fox 13) reported.

“he [the homeowner] He didn't stall because he knew something bad was about to happen. He grabbed a gun and told his wife to run to a safe location,” the sheriff said. “This is Florida. If you want to break into someone's house, you have to be prepared to get shot.”

The homeowner reportedly told his wife to pick up a gun and find a safe place inside the house to protect their home and family. Florida is a Castle Doctrine state, which allows homeowners to use deadly force to protect themselves or others.

The homeowner entered the room where the Mexican was standing, later identified as Nesteban Flores-Toledo, 27, also known as Anibal Miller-Valencia. The homeowner fired at least three shots, striking the intruder multiple times.

The second man, 39-year-old Michelle Sotomela, was attempting to gain entry into the home through a window when he backed away, the sheriff's office said. Investigators with a K-9 team tracked the Chilean immigrant and arrested him several blocks from his home.

The sheriff said Miller-Valencia had an active warrant out of Oak Brook, Illinois, for a parole violation. The Mexican was deemed armed and dangerous after being convicted of residential burglary in 2023.

Miller-Valencia died Friday morning at Sarasota Memorial Hospital from gunshot wounds sustained during a robbery earlier this week.

The sheriff said Sotomela, a Chilean national, entered California on a 90-day visa. That visa expired in September.

Sotomela is being held in the Manatee County Jail on suspicion of armed robbery. Officials said he could face felony murder charges in connection with Miller-Valencia's death.

“We're trying to get as much information as possible from the suspect,” Wells explained. “He's been cooperative to an extent, but he's not telling us everything.”
