Putin offers to pay off debts as recruitment tool in war against Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin appears to have taken an excerpt from President Biden's book, proposing to cancel the debt of new recruits joining the country's military for one year.

In November, President Putin signed a law that allows those who join the Russian military after December 1, 2024 to have their debts of up to 10 million rubles (about $96,000) canceled.

The law applies to debts for which a court has issued a collection order and enforcement proceedings have been initiated before December 1, 2024, the Associated Press reported. This law also applies to spouses of new employees.

The move appears similar to one in Biden's own strategy, although the latter does not link loan benefits to military conscription.

Earlier this month, as Biden and Vice President Harris prepared to leave the White House, the Biden administration announced $4.28 billion in student loan benefits.

The massive benefit will provide loan forgiveness to 54,900 public employees, bringing the total loan forgiveness approved by Biden to nearly $180 billion for nearly 5 million borrowers.

The Biden-Harris Administration will create an “incentive” for public servants to “pursue and continue” their careers by forgiving balances after borrowers have made 120 qualifying monthly payments, a program was advertised.

But for Russia, debt cancellation is just another step in Putin's plan to build up Russia's military as it continues its war against Ukraine.

The Associated Press reported Sunday that Western leaders said North Korea was sending about 10,000 troops to support Russian military operations.

Russia has also reportedly worked with the Houthi terrorist network to lure Yemeni men to Russia under false pretenses and conscripted hundreds of Yemenis to take part in the war in Ukraine, the Financial Times reported. It is being
