A magnitude 4.7 earthquake struck Northern California on New Year's Day, shaking buildings as far away as Sacramento, but causing little damage and no fatalities.
United States Geological Survey reported The earthquake occurred at 6:34 p.m. Wednesday, 4 kilometers north-northwest of Cobb, California, and about an hour west of the state capital Sacramento.

Across Lake County, residents reported feeling the powerful main shock, which was variously described as violent shaking, with objects falling off walls and shelves and furniture shifting.
Some said it was the strongest earthquake they had felt in Lake County.

Small to moderate earthquakes occur fairly frequently in California, and residents train and prepare for larger ones. As a result, you may be forced to evacuate for several days or live without essential services.
Tsunamis can also occur along coastlines. Not only can earthquakes occur nearby, but they can also occur far away in the Pacific Ocean.
