Steve Hilton’s Immigration Stance as California Governor Candidate
Steve Hilton, the Republican contender for the governorship of California, has expressed strong support for Donald Trump’s immigration policies. He has promised not to hinder federal immigration law enforcement if he is elected.
The 52-year-old businessman and former Fox News host focuses on a variety of populist issues—tax cuts, reducing government spending, and immigration, among others.
On immigration, Hilton stated he is a proponent of legal immigration, arguing that illegal immigration ultimately harms the interests of those who come to the U.S. legally. He emphasized that it doesn’t make sense to have many Californians seeking work while simultaneously relying on undocumented labor from abroad.
Hilton aims to position himself as “the candidate for the legal immigrant community,” promising to shift California’s immigration stance.
He stated, “Unlike previous confrontational approaches, my administration will ensure that all laws are enforced peacefully.” He referred to recent unrest in cities like Los Angeles and Minneapolis as undesirable outcomes he seeks to avoid.
Hilton further explained that crafting immigration policy falls under federal jurisdiction. He underscored that governors should allow the federal government to carry out its mandate without interference.
He also highlighted that the upcoming election cycle is part of President Trump’s immigration agenda, suggesting that Democrats shouldn’t dismiss the outcomes of national elections.
“A single party won in key battleground states on a clear immigration platform, and now the administration is acting on that decision,” he said. He believes that questioning the results of the 2024 election on immigration isn’t a viable option for any candidate wishing to uphold constitutional principles.
He noted that the increasing number of illegal immigrants is unfair to legal immigrants, stating, “I want to restore the ladder of opportunity for all legal immigrant families.” Hilton shared his personal experience of having achieved the California dream, expressing concern that many people no longer share that reality.
Additionally, he criticized farm worker unions for allegedly hindering agricultural automation development.
In his closing remarks, Hilton stressed that illegal immigration places an undue burden on California’s healthcare system. He argued it is unreasonable for California taxpayers to fund healthcare for non-citizens. “California should align its benefits for immigrants more closely with what the federal government offers,” he suggested, referencing laws that restrict benefits for citizens from other countries.
