New Orleans assistant DA apparently commits suicide just days after terrorist attack

Around 9 p.m. Saturday, New Orleans police received a call about a man who was found with an “apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound,” according to an initial police report. WWL. First responders then arrived at the Orleans Parish District Attorney's Office on South White Street in New Orleans and pronounced the victim dead shortly thereafter.

The victim was later identified as Assistant District Attorney Ian Kersting. He was only 34 years old.

The prosecutor's office released two statements regarding Kersting's death. WVUE Reported. The initial statement described Mr Kersting as a “beloved member of our office” and expressed love and condolences to Mr Kersting's family and friends.

“It is important that we support each other at this time and we ask the media to respect the privacy of the individuals affected,” the initial statement added.

A second statement indicated that office operations would cease on January 6 to allow staff time to grieve. A second statement said grief and trauma counselors would be available “to the entire OPDA team in the event of an unexpected tragedy.”

Kersting had been practicing law for about four years at the time of his death. Kersting's suicide came on the heels of a horrific massacre of crowds still celebrating in the French Quarter in the early morning hours of New Year's Day. According to reports, around 3:15 a.m., Shamsuddin Jabbar, 42, from Texas, drove down Bourbon Street at high speed in a rented truck, mowing down dozens of pedestrians.

At least 15 people were killed and 35 injured.

The FBI confirmed that Jabbar, who died shortly after in a gunfight with police, was in possession of an ISIS flag at the time of the incident.

According to reports from friends and family, Mr. Jabbar has been acting strangely recently because of his Islamic faith. Dwayne Marsh, who is married to Mr Jabbar's ex-wife, said Mr Jabbar had been “completely insane” in recent months, including “cutting his hair” after converting to Islam.

However, Jabbar's brother Abdul said Jabbar converted some time ago. “As far as I know, he was a Muslim most of his life,” Abdul said.

“His actions do not represent Islam. This is not a religion, it is a type of radicalization.”
