Arrests Made After 16 Children Discovered in Disturbing Conditions
Authorities have arrested four individuals after uncovering 16 children living in what has been described as “deplorable” conditions at a home in rural Ohio, needing medical attention.
Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson held a news conference detailing the grim situation, revealing that the children were found during a search in Hamden, located about 90 miles southeast of Columbus. “It’s hard to fathom putting anyone—especially children—through such circumstances,” he expressed.
Children were promptly taken from the home. Wilson deemed the scene the most horrific he had encountered in his career, labeling it “pure evil.” When they were found, some of the children were in critical condition, with two requiring immediate transport to a trauma center for treatment.
“Had we waited just another day, we might have been facing the tragic loss of one or more of these kids,” Wilson added, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
Vinton County Sheriff Ryan Cain described the unsanitary environment, pointing out a significant presence of fecal matter and bacteria. “It’s just devastating, really. The conditions… they were worse than what you’d expect for livestock,” he said.
The arrested individuals, identified as Gary Siders Sr., Gary Siders Jr., Christina Siders, and Elizabeth Siders, are facing 16 counts of second-degree child endangerment. During a court appearance, a judge entered not guilty pleas on their behalf and set their bail at $300,000.
Officials have yet to confirm whether the children are related, although they range in age from 18 months to 18 years and include both boys and girls.
Wilson assured that justice would be served for the children. Vinton County Prosecutor William Archer clarified that the individuals charged are not from the local area, stating, “This is a family issue and not a case of human trafficking. Other children are not at risk here.”
On a separate note, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine mentioned he is being kept updated about the situation. He shared his heartbreak over the children’s conditions, noting that Attorney General Wilson indicated he had never witnessed anything like this before. Governor DeWine expressed gratitude towards those involved in assisting the children, saying that he and his wife are praying for their recovery.
