On Monday's broadcast of “CNN This Morning,” Rep. Jake Auchincloss (D-Mass.) said the issue “allows people to move on to concerns about the economy and concerns about border security.” He said that he thought it was natural. The 2020 election will be certified “because they can presume that our institutional and constitutional order will be protected.” And January 6th has been “overshadowed by other more pressing and salient issues. And the reason it's been overshadowed is because, frankly, Democrats are going to protect America's peaceful transfer of power.” Because our voters have confidence. They know that whether we win or lose, we will respect the rules of the game.”
Mr Auchincloss said: [relevant remarks begin around 27:30] “I think this country takes for granted that members of Congress returned to the floor on January 6th to certify the election results, and then the American people move on to concerns about the economy and border security. That's a good thing because they can assume that America's institutional and constitutional order is in place. Today should be boring.
Host Casey Hunt then asked, “What do you think convinced the American people that this shouldn't be a top voting priority? It's President Trump, for re-explaining it to the people. So was it an effort by President-elect Trump, or was it something else?”
“No, I think January 6th remains unpopular,” Auchincloss said. I think the attempted insurrection on January 6th was a mark of disgrace to the American republic, and indeed a majority of voters recognize that, and a significant number of Republicans recognize that as well. It has been overshadowed by other more pressing and salient issues And the reason it's become less noticeable is, frankly, because American voters are confident that the Democratic Party will protect the peaceful transfer of power even if we win. I know that even if I lose, I will respect the rules of the game.”
