CNN political analyst Maggie Haberman spoke Tuesday on “Anderson Cooper 360” about President-elect Donald Trump's desire to acquire Greenland from Denmark and take control of the Panama Canal during a press conference. “It's clearly an expansionist mindset,” he said.
Haberman said: “Especially in Greenland, these things are not all the same. Panama is a relatively new focus for him. In Greenland, as Caitlin said, not only has he been talking about it for a while. Many people have been talking about it for a while now. This idea of acquiring Leanland, as you know, has been around for decades. Ron Lauder, a close friend of Mr. Trump, suggested it to him during his first term. It's not completely gone, but President Trump has clearly fallen into an expansionist mindset.”
She added, “He also keeps talking about Canada being the 51st province, which is obviously trolling and kind of a control play. But as Caitlin says, , many people were surprised that President Trump talked about military action, or at least didn't rule out military action. I wonder if that's actually what he's thinking, or this press conference. What he said because he was clearly in a pretty bad mood It's not clear if that's the case, mainly because of the legal challenges he faces this week in his criminal case in New York and the potential release of Jack Smith's report and documents from the federal case. So while it remains to be seen what that will look like when he takes office, it is clear that Trump has never particularly respected sovereign borders, at least in his language. Not surprising. Let's see what happens in real practice.”
