Expanding free filing options for 2025
For the 2025 season, The IRS's free tax filing program, Direct File, is open to: Eligible taxpayers in 25 states. This is up from 12 states for the 2024 season.
This year's participating states include Alaska, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and the South. IRS Free File, on the other hand, offers free guided tax preparation through its software partners. Opens on January 10th. Eligible taxpayers will be able to electronically file returns prepared through Free File partners starting January 27th.
