Stavridis says Trump’s plan for Greenland ‘not a crazy idea’

Former NATO Supreme Allied Commander James Stavridis said he doesn't think President-elect Trump's comments about Greenland are “crazy.”

“It's not a far-fetched idea. … We can do so many things in terms of business, investment, get rid of the Russians, get rid of the Chinese, work very closely with Greenland. “We can do that,” he said in an interview with radio host John Catsimatidis on Sunday. “The Cats Roundtable” on WABC 770 AM.

Stavridis expressed support for Trump's idea, saying he considers Greenland “a strategic gold mine for the United States.”

“It is located at the top of the North Atlantic Ocean. It protects the access to our country… It is of great geographical importance. It is packed with strategic minerals, rare earths and probably a large amount of gold. “We have a lot of natural resources,” he said at the beginning of the interview.

“We don't have to be the 51st state, but that's definitely an economic goal for us,” he added.

“I think that's what will come of it…The prime minister of Greenland said, 'We're not for sale.' But we're open for business.”I think we should take him at his word. ”

President Trump last week announced his ambitions for the United States to acquire Greenland, the world's largest island. Greenland Prime Minister Mute Egede “Greenland is for Greenlanders. We don't want to be Danes, we don't want to be Americans. We want to be Greenlanders,” he said Friday.

Egede also said he was “ready” to have a dialogue with Trump.
