NYC faces 6 inches of snow from polar vortex. Here’s when it will start

A powerful polar vortex blanketed the Big Apple with 6 inches of snow Sunday afternoon, bringing bone-chilling temperatures and wind chills of -15 degrees that are expected to continue into next week.

A winter weather warning will be in effect for New York City from 1 p.m. until Monday morning as temperatures drop below freezing and up to a half-foot of snow will fall in the tri-state area.

“Temperatures will plummet and we'll see a wintry combination before we get some heavy snow,” Fox Prediction Center meteorologist Marissa Lautenbacher told the Post.

Temperatures will drop below 10 degrees and winds will drop to -15 degrees next week. fox weather

“When it starts snowing, the temperature basically drops like a rock,” Lautenbacher added.

New Yorkers will need to pull out their gloves and scarves by the afternoon, as freezing rain will turn to heavy snow by Sunday dinner, snarling roads in time for the evening commute.

“The heaviest snow will start falling in the mid-to-late afternoon, probably around dinner time, and stop overnight. It will be very cold, with a low of 17 degrees,” Lautenbacher added.

The five boroughs are expected to see 4 to 6 inches of snow, while coastal areas of Connecticut and Long Island can expect 3 to 5 inches of snow.

Meanwhile, a state of emergency was declared in New Jersey ahead of the storm, as parts of the Garden State could be hit by the storm. Up to 10 inches of snow.

Up to half a foot of snow will blanket I-95 from Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia to Boston.

“I would basically advise people that if you have something to do today, do it early and then stay home for the rest of the afternoon,” Lautenbacher said.

The snow will stop around 1 a.m. but will stick around thanks to bone-chilling temperatures in the low teens expected through Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service, strong winds will bring temperatures as low as -15 degrees Celsius.

Wind gusts of up to 20 mph are expected to batter the region through midweek, and city officials have issued a “Code Blue” cold warning.

Mayor Adams on Saturday warned New Yorkers to prepare for widespread road disruption and urged locals to limit their use of public transportation and travel.

The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday will mean schools will be closed and snowplows will be able to clear roads more efficiently, Adams said.
