Churches that Might Be Used to Dodge ICE ‘Have to Be Off-Limits for ICE’

Denver Mayor Mike Johnston said Monday in an interview with Denver's 9NEWS that churches “have to be off limits because of ICE's actions,” adding that churches in the state are offering sanctuary to people trying to avoid ICE. He said that there is a possibility of providing.

“It's important to us first that all of these things that we call safe places, churches, schools, hospitals, should be off-limits because of ICE operations,” Johnston said. They have historically been that way. The idea had bipartisan support. ”

Host Kyle Clark then asked, “I remember during the Obama administration, when there were a lot of deportations, Colorado used to take people to their churches for shelter. What do you think about that?” Ta. What do you think about people taking shelter in government buildings? If they truly see the city of Denver as a sanctuary, maybe some political activist, maybe someone within your city government, maybe others. Elected officials may want to put someone inside a Denver building to protect them from ICE. ”

Johnston said he doesn't think that's likely to happen and asked, “Would churches across the state step in and try to provide sanctuary again if people needed it?” . I think that's likely or possible. We don't expect to do that in city buildings. ”
