Former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio argued Thursday on MSNBC's “The Ana Cabrera Report” that the Trump administration's planned mass deportations are “totally un-American.”
“For example, I want to be careful about unaccompanied minors. I went to Tornillo, Texas, and saw one of the detention facilities for children. Americans were outraged. Under no circumstances should we It's not in keeping with our values to see families separated. Americans believe in due process. Americans believe in the concept of government authorities knocking on people's doors. I don’t like it.”
He added: “So what's happening now is the frustration that people were feeling about their economic reality, or the frustration that they felt about the chaos at the border, and that was real. I think it was an honest complaint, and it was immediately followed by people saying, “Wait a minute, we never signed up for anything like actual mass deportation or a police state.” I believe it will be replaced. It's just not American. Americans have very strong libertarian tendencies, from left to right to centrist. ”
Mr. de Blasio continued, “It sounds great, it's removing people who have committed crimes, and of course there are people who don't want to remove people who have actually committed crimes, but it's a much bigger deal.''
