Rubio has traveled in the Central America and the Caribbean on his first major trip to the State Department, mainly focusing on the suppression of illegal immigrants and drug trafficking to the United States. He has recently visited Panama and El Salvador and travels to the Dominican Republic.
When President Trump proposed a U.S. plan to regain the rule of the Panama Canal, his trip to Costa Rica's southern neighbors came. However, the Panama government pushed back.
