The senators on Wednesday proceeded with the nominations of Howard Lutnick and Kelly Loeffler. President Trump's election leads the Department of Commerce and Small Business Management (SBA), respectively.
Both nominations have been reported by the committee and are heading to the floor of all Senators for consideration as Republicans step up their efforts to set up Trump candidates.
If confirmed as expected, Lutonic will play a key role in managing Trump's trade and the broader economic agenda.
The Commerce Department is responsible for overseeing the implementation of tariffs and the process by which industries and businesses can apply for exemptions. While Trump and Lutnick support full tariffs as an issue of fairness, the administration may still exempt strategically or politically important goods from import taxes.
Lutnick oversees the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS), the agency responsible for implementing import and export bans, along with other national security-related trade rules.
The BIS could play a central role in the Trump administration's push to crack down on the use of US technology and services by Chinese artificial intelligence companies.
“I think they are them [China] They just want to hurt us by caring for ourselves. And we need to protect ourselves,” Rutnick said Wednesday.
“If they're going to compete with us, let them compete, but stop competing with us using our tools.”
