Tom Brady denied the idea that he was protected by the referee, and even argued for more generosity for the defenders when they hit the quarterback.
Brady has reviewed some of the biggest hits he's ever received in his 23-year career, saying that quarterbacks need to be in the pocket to “make throws and get hits.” I insisted.
Chatter is approaching ahead of the Super Bowl, where Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is receiving priority treatment from the NFL referee. Even NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and Brady's former teammate Julian Edelmann roared the theme, denying Mahomes catering.
Brady said Mahomes plays in the rules and “plays” how the call is being done, but he mainly leaves the Chief Star and says that the defenders will make a hit. It focused on supporting the idea that it should be allowed.
reaction “Quarterback who does a lot, this doesn't work,” Brady said in the highlights that showed he scrambled and eventually flattened.
NFL legend justified the hit he received and pointed out in several plays that he “slided late.”
“It's going to be a 100% penalty now in the NFL. Is that right? “I mean, that was it. What should he do? I'll knock out s**t from me and try to knock the ball. It's supposed to be.”
Brady further said he would come to the player's defense on the other side of the ball and only prevent him from going down first while he's trying to get it.
“But now they are trying to protect themselves from being punished. Great defense defended every blade of grass,” recalls the Champion.
Brady then described the outside of the pocket as being like a “five-lane highway.” They lose protection when the quarterback is outside their pocket, he adds, explaining that the only way they can protect themselves at that point is to slide or throw the ball. He then insisted on a rule that allowed players “within five yards” at the quarterback to hit him.
“What I want is a tough, hard-nosed, physical game. I don't want a game where the offense can move the ball and blame the defenses that are tackled.”
“What planet do you live on?”
Like Mahomes, Brady was accused throughout his career of being on the receiving end of many advantageous calls to protect him.
Brady asked his detractors, “What planet do you live on?”, watching the compilation of the brutal hits he had received.
“How can anyone see this and tell me I was protected?” he grumbled.
The seven-time Super Bowl winner continued to describe toughness as a state of mind, complaining that too many players are willing to stay on the ground as if they were injured.
“You could have stood up and walked out of the field,” he said.
Brady said that players who behave this way show a defeatist mentality.
Ultimately, the retired players said that big hits were just part of the game and that if the quarterback wanted protection, they should remove the ball.
“If you want to hold it in the final moments, you had a chance to take the hit.”
