NYC Teachers' Union guides educators on how to help immigrant children and families get picked up by immigrants and customs enforcement agencies in their homes and in public places.
Last week's Zoom session urged teachers leaders to print and distribute “red cards” to teachers. It was a tool created by immigration advocates, and spelled out the constitutional rights of asylum seekers when faced by ice officers.
“If ice comes to your house, you don't have to open the door. In fact, you shouldn't open the door,” UFT representative Katie Kurjakovic said on Wednesday for an hour on undocumented protection for students and families. He spoke at the workshop.
“If you open the door and leave the chain on, it can be interpreted as putting ice in, so you should close the door and leave it silent. “I sue the fifth , choose to remain silent,'' says Kurjakovic, who said the teacher should advise.
Non-English speakers can slide “red cards” under the door, she added.
The card, created by the nonprofit Immigration Legal Resource Center (ILRC), states in English and other languages: Under the US Constitution. ”
The card also states that he “does not grant permission to enter my home under my fourth amendment.”
Kurjakovic told the teacher what colored paper the cards could be printed on. Link to that website A list of immigrant students and family resources.
Some municipal schools have begun Distribution of cards Following President Trump's inauguration on January 20th, the attacks and deportation began. Last week, ICE officials detained more than 100 NYC immigrants.
But some principals “we're not comfortable doing that,” Krujakovic said. They want a green light to print and distribute cards from Prime Minister Melissa Aviles Ramo.
DOE spokesman Nicole Brownstein refused to say whether the prime minister would sanction the practice. Aviles Ramos eased criticism of Trump's immigrant crackdown, but Mayor Adams has pledged to help close off the criminal immigration.
City doe does not offer that card Resource Pageinstead, it focuses on what staff should do if ice agents show up at school. Essentially, they are prohibited without court orders or subpoena.
The mayor's immigration office has not quoted the card, Advice to immigrants They don't need to open the door for ice/immigration, they can stay silent or ask if the agent has a judicial warrant.
Manhattan-based immigration lawyer John Cavallo suspects that the red card will stop ice agents based on the recent attack in Newark. They took US military veterans.
“I really don't think anyone would show this card, so Ice agent said, 'Oh, sorry, sorry for the trouble,' Cavallo said, but he hopes that Ice will follow the Constitution. I added.

At the Zoom Workshop, Kurjakovic said that teachers should instruct students and families to carry only library cards or other city-issued IDs.
“We know from immigration advocacy groups that it is very important for people to not have documents at this point. [suggests] They were born in another country. Because it can raise questions. ”
A high school teacher who attended the Zoom session expressed skepticism. They are [ICE] Unless a 17-year-old was here illegally here and raped someone, he wasn't in a single school. ”
