According to state police, a late-night snowmobile by a group of friends ended in a tragedy with mountains piled up on frozen Upstate Lake over the weekend.
Spencer Schmidt of Batavia was on board with four friends each before 3am on Sunday, just before the group was slammed into another abandoned snowmobile at the fourth lake in Herkimer County. Ta. The Troopers said in the release.
Three of his companions — Colephelps, Carl Stevens and Joshua Boyle — all 26 people were injured in the crash and were treated at the scene, but Schmidt was declared dead in the lake.
Zachary dusky, 26, only one member of the group avoided the crash.
The abandoned snowmobile was registered with a 37-year-old man identified as Eric Butler, according to state police.
Police said none of the riders involved were under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time.
“At this point there are no signs of criminality and this incident looks like a tragic accident.”
The snowmobile was taken to the Carthage State Police for further investigation by the State Police Clash Reconstruction Unit and the Forensic Investigation Unit. Reported by Syracuse.com.
