The Senate confirmed that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will lead the Department of Health and Human Services on Thursday. Kennedy is the 15th member of President Donald Trump's Cabinet.
The Senate confirmed Kennedy with a 52-48 vote, with former Republican leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) voted for the candidate. McConnell is currently opposed to Trump's three candidates. These include National Intelligence Director Tarsi Gabbard and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegses.
Much to the disappointment of the Democrats, the candidate was once considered a long shot, but it was thought that each and every one of them would serve in Trump's cabinet.
“President Trump tapped Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to lead the charges to make America healthy again,” said Republican majority leader John Toon (SD). I said At a floor speech on Tuesday. “He is committed to making HHS a joint, transparent, science-led agency under his leadership.”
“Our public health agencies do an important job, I am a supporter of their research and I am proud to be able to contribute to American leadership and medicine and innovation,” Thune said. I continued. “But if we are going to make America healthy again, the institution doing this important work must rebuild its trust with Americans.”
A few important Republicans gathered behind Kennedy, leading up to his confirmation.
Alaska Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski supported Kennedy shortly after the Senate proceeded with the nomination Wednesday. Maine Republican Sen. Susan Collins came out in support of the candidate on Tuesday. In particular, both Collins and Markowski have a history of voting against Secretary of Defense Pete Hegses, deviating from the partisan vote.
Murkowski and Collins previously defeated their party, but both senators side by side supported Kennedy.
Kennedy is the latest in Trump's more controversial candidates to secure his confirmation. The Senate notably confirmed that Tarshi Gabbard will serve as director of national intelligence on Wednesday, raising the nomination of FBI leader Kash Patel on Thursday morning.
Much to the disappointment of the Democrats, the candidate was once considered a long shot, but it was thought that each and every one of them would serve in Trump's cabinet.
