News Nation contributor and former White House Prime Minister Mick Mulvaney said President Trump and Elon Musk are itching in the fight against the court over cutting the federal workforce.
Mulvaney was overwhelmed by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), sending notes to federal agencies demanding that plans be taken over by large government layoffs.
It follows an executive order from Trump that provided more specific guidance, including mandating layoffs and breaking down plans for cuts.
“I was impressed with the professionalism today [in] Note, the amount of thoughts that went into it,” Mulbany said Wednesday of News Nation's “hill.” “Obviously they've been doing their homework. My guess is that they're itchy for a fight with the court about how much they can do this kind of thing.”
Mulvaney also mentioned recent emails from OPM, asking workers last week to detail what they had achieved. Musk said online that if he fails to respond to the email it would be considered a resignation, but as the confusion spread, the decision was ultimately voluntary and left to different agencies.
“My guess is that there's a way to get mad at emails,” Mulbany told host Blake Berman.
He believes that those who didn't respond to OPM's emails will be on the chopping block, adding that the Trump administration can argue that their position is not necessary.
“It's fascinating to watch because executives have the authority to do this on a rather grand scale. They might actually be able to reduce the size of the government,” Mulbany said.
