Buttigieg says he's worried about same-sex marriage being overturned by Supreme Court

Former Transport Secretary Pete Battigigue said Tuesday that he was worried about the Supreme Court overturning previous decisions to legalize same-sex marriages across the country.

Buttigieg raised concerns when he appeared on CBS's “The Late Show” on Tuesday night.

“Are you afraid that this Supreme Court will overturn Obergefell?” Host Stephen Colbert refers to a 2015 ruling that stated under the 14th Amendment the state must admit the marriage of two same-sex people.

“Of course,” Buttigieg later added that he “appears to not be grossly worried about allowing precedents to be set.

Comment from Buttigieg, who is openly gay and married to another man, has seen the LGBTQ community, especially transgender people, facing an increase in attacks from the right.

In recent years, several states have moved forward with gender-affirming care bans, and President Trump recently signed an executive order that only allows genders of men and women.

In late January, the Idaho House passed a resolution promoting the Supreme Court's reassessment to reassess the legality of same-sex marriage.

“Christians across the country are being targeted,” said Idaho Sen. Heather Scott (R), who sponsored the measure.

With his arrival in The Late Show, Buttigieg said the United States is “always at its best when it expands its circle of belonging and equality to care for more people.”

Oka reached out to the Supreme Court for comment.
