(UPI) – Stranger Things actress Millie Bobby Brown has joined social media to deal with criticism of her appearance.
“I started in the industry when I was 10. I grew up in front of the world. For some reason, it seems like people can't grow up with me,” she said in an Instagram video posted Monday evening. “Instead, they act like I'm supposed to continue to freeze in time, just like I did in Stranger Things season 1.”
Brown was 12 years old when season one of the Netflix series was released in 2016.
In her post, the now 21-year-old actress featured an article that came out in preparation for the release of her new Netflix film, The Electric State, on March 14th.
The story she mentioned was published by The Daily Mail. One Piece begins with the headline “Why is There Like Millie Bobby Brown so aging so badly?” Another headline begins with “What did Millie Bobby Brown do to her face?” And the third one is titled “Millie Bobby Brown mistakes him for “someone's mom” and leads his sister Ava from the crowd in LA.”
Yet another headline explains that Brown has the “mom's transformation” look.
“This is not journalism, it's bullying,” Brown said. “The fact that adult writers spend their time on my face, my body, my choices is in the way, and the fact that some of these articles are written by women is even worse.”
“Disillusioned people can't see girls becoming women on their own terms. “I refuse to apologise for growing up. I refuse to make myself smaller to meet the unrealistic expectations of people who can't see girls becoming women.”
She concluded the video by asking the media to “do better” for all young women.
The video received 1.2 million likes and provided similar support for fans and stars.
“I'm extremely proud of you,” wrote Sarah Jessica Parker.
“I said beautifully,” wrote Sharon Stone. “… Our age or height doesn't really matter. We must be willing to own ourselves and not fall into the false ideology of demolishing the media. My friends are a good job.”
