Secret Service shoots armed Indiana man near White House

The US Secret Service shot an Indiana man a block away from the White House on Sunday morning after the agency was warned by local police to “suicide individuals,” the agency said.

“The Secret Service representative was involved in the shooting following an armed encounter with someone of interest on March 9th, 17th and just after midnight at G Streets NW,” said a secret service spokesman. Anthony Guglielmi confirmed with X.

Federal agents discovered the man's car parked near the intersection of 17th Avenue and F Street, one block west of the White House's West Wing.

The unidentified man was walking north towards the famous Pennsylvania Avenue.

An “armed conflict” took place when the man pulled out the firearm.

Agents from the Secret Service fired a shot at a man who was taken to a local hospital in unknown conditions, the agency said.

Members of the Secret Service were not injured, the agency said.

President Donald Trump was staying in Florida at his Mar Lago resort at the time of the shooting.

The man reported as a suicide is believed to have traveled to the Capitol from Indiana on Saturday, leading local police to notify the Secret Service.

It was not clear what his motivation was.

The DC Metropolitan Police Department's interior affairs department is leading an investigation into the shooting.

During Trump's first term, a man was shot by the Secret Service while the president was holding a press conference inside the West Wing in August 2020.

The 51-year-old suspect fired a shot at the White House before “running aggressively” at the agent who shot a gunman in his torso.

Trump was temporarily removed from the White House press briefing room, but later returned.
