Slotkin: Trump Tariffs ‘Reckless,’ ‘Chaotic’

Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) said he did not oppose tariffs on Sunday in NBC's “meeting.”

However, she said President Donald Trump's tariffs were “reckless and “confusing.”

Slotkin said: I think tariffs are an important tool in the toolkit. I think the way he handles tariffs is how he handles everything else right now. We want change, but there are reckless changes, then there are responsible changes. The way he's on again creates this chaotic feeling, as if Canada is just the same as China. ”

She said, “Michigan will probably be one of the most affected states across the country between manufacturing and farmers. I am not particularly opposed to China, as a rule, but are you Canadian? For our farmers, it's our number one market as a state in Canada. I just want a female, not a sledgehammer for these things.”

Host Kristen Welker said, “To be clear, we're opposed to tariffs on Canada and what about Mexico?”

Slotkin said, “So, especially looking at the way my secretary Lutonic was talking about fentanyl, I just want to be clear, we are now a few miles away from the US-Canada border. Fentanyl coming across the Canadian border last year was 43 pounds in total. That's not what's going on at the southern border. We know how to manage our borders and provide security to our borders. We've been doing it seamlessly for years.”
