Aaron Rodgers will be officially released by the Jets at 4pm on Wednesday.
Before that, he could have a new team.
And while that team could become a Giants, it could also be someone else who is interested in leading the 41-year-old quarterback to the shortcomings of his Hall of Fame career.
The Giants, and all other teams plunging in for the quarterback, are allowed to speak to Rogers after the Jets let it know through a broken news story on their website on February 13th.
Negotiations have been allowed since then as well, but the actual contract cannot be signed until released by the Jets.
It's clear that Rogers isn't the Giants' first choice.
Their plan A was Matthew Stafford, and they reached as long as they agreed to an extension of the contract.
They had been talking with Stafford for nearly a month, but the Giants were able to wield trade with the Rams and believed that Stafford would become the next starting quarterback.
Stafford eventually chose to return to the Rams.
The Giants saw Stafford, 36, have at least two good seasons for him, and getting him would alleviate the need to select a quarterback with the third pick in next month's NFL Draft.
Rogers is considered a nine-month rental, and his presence means that the Giants are still likely to try to win Camward or Chedure Sanders or trade with Titans.
Rodgers then began and the rookie watched and learned, depending on how he and the team went.
If things go south, he is inserted into the lineup when the rookie is considered ready.
It is still unclear what market is there for Rogers.
The Vikings make sense if an experienced and capable starter wants to keep the fort. That's until JJ McCarthy, the first round pick in 2024, is completely healthy following two knee surgeries that forced him to miss out on his rookie season.
Released by the Giants during the season, Daniel Jones is also an option to re-sign with the Vikings. He was on the practice team last season.
This means that the Seahawks trade Genosmith for the Raiders. The Raiders don't need a quarterback, but the Seahawks do.
It's safe to say the Giants threw some lines into the sea of quarterbacks.
They are watching what happens at 36-year-old Russell Wilson, and he could become their man.
Sam Darnold revived his Viking career in 2024, but is not expected to return to Minnesota.
He is expected to be a top option to replace Seattle's Smith.
Rodgers may also be interested in the Steelers, depending on what he does with Wilson and Justin Fields.
The Giants are off the 3-14 season and general manager Joe Shane and head coach Brian Daball understand that they need to win far more games in 2025.
They are eager to find a capable quarterback in free agency and solid prospects in drafting, and only Tommy DeVito is on the roster for that position.
Last season, Rodgers threw 28 touchdown passes for 3,897 yards, but the Jets were 5-12, with Rodgers failing to arrive several times the stretch. The Jets went 3-7 in one score game.
After seeing rumors about Rogers and Vicking's pairing, Jets cornerback sauce Gardner added a crying emoji to his X account on Sunday, saying, “If Aaron goes to the Viking, he might be number one in all QB stats.”
The Giants certainly know all of Rogers' quirks and controversy, and realize that he is far from a slam dunk choice.
They also know that all options are flawed.
There is no perfect choice, but you need to create a choice.
