Tesla warns that IT and other US exporters could be hit by retaliatory tariffs as president Donald Trump It imposes taxes on American trading partners.
In a letter sent to US trade representative Jamieson Greer earlier this week, Tesla wrote that “it supports a robust and thorough process of gathering information to ensure that appropriate actions are taken to address unfair trade practices and not inadvertently harm US businesses in the process.”
Tesla CEO Elon Musk is a close ally of Trump and entrusts him with leading the government's efficiency (DOGE), and the company's concerns resemble those raised by other US exporters amid the growing trade war.
“As a US manufacturer and exporter, Tesla encourages USTR to consider the downstream impacts taken to address unfair trade practices,” writes Tesla.

“While Tesla recognizes and supports the importance of fair trade, the assessment made by USTR of potential actions to rectify unfair trade should also be considered exports from the United States,” the letter said.

“U.S. exporters are exposed to inherently disproportionate effects when other countries respond to US trade actions. For example, past US trade actions have resulted in immediate responses by target countries, including increased tariffs on EVs imported to these countries,” the company added.

The Tesla letter also outlined that past tariff battles caused increased competition for the company's vehicles as manufacturing costs increased and overseas sales prices increased.
“So, past special tariff measures, (1) the cost of vehicles manufactured in the US to Tesla increases, and (2) the cost of the same vehicle when exported from the US, and as a result [a] “An international market that is less competitive for US manufacturers,” Tesla explained.
Tesla also wrote, “future trade policy measures should take into account existing restrictions on the domestic supply chain.”
Stellantis says it aims to produce more Americans.

Tesla has a large number of domestic components in its supply chain, but some auto parts cannot be procured in the US, putting automakers at the hassle burden that makes it more difficult to maintain jobs in American manufacturing.
“Even with aggressive supply chain localization, certain parts and components are difficult or impossible to source within the United States. “As USTR continues to evaluate possible trade measures to correct unfair trade practices, it should also be considered in its implementation timeline. US companies will benefit from a step-by-step approach that prepares accordingly and ensures that appropriate supply chain and compliance measures are taken,” the Tesla letter concluded.
