Jets bring back kick returner Kene Nwangwu on one-year deal

Kene Nwangwu has another return.

Nwangwu, who scored a 99-yard kickoff return in his Jets debut last season, agreed to return to the team on Friday.

According to the NFL Network, the one-year contract is worth up to $2.5 million incentives.

The Jets also announced the signature of punter Austin McNamara, and the agency of receiver Tyler Johnson announced he will sign a contract with the team.

The 27-year-old Nwangwu first promoted from the practice squad in Week 12 last season, earning the Jets three kick-off returns and scores for the Seahawks.

However, he made another appearance before suffering a season-ending hand injury.

The Jets have the first new special team coordinator since 2016. Head coach Aaron Glenn brought in former Sean Payton Protector Chris Banjo.

Blunt Boyer, who survived the Jets coaching changes from Todd Bowles to Adam Gus to Robert Saleh, followed by Saleh to the 49ers.

Of course, Nwangwu's resume is well known throughout the universe of special teams. He was the second team All-Pro in 2022, averaging 26.3 yards per kickoff return for the Vikings in 2022.

Dynamic Returners are once again gaining value as the NFL's competition committee is considering tinkering with kickoff rules by changing the ball's spot to further reduce touchbacks in 2025 and further reduce the number of returns per game.

Nwangwu is a run by trade that got one offensive snap last season and earned 27 career rushes.

McNamara, 24, was not drafted by Texas Tech in 2024 and spent time in training camp with the Bengals.

He has no experience in the NFL games.

The 26-year-old Johnson has 76 catches and four TDs for 828 yards in a 49-game career with the Buccaneers, Texans and Rams.
