LOS ANGELES – Matt Richman won his 40th Los Angeles Marathon on Sunday, becoming the first American to win the title in 31 years.
He set a personal time of 2 hours, 7 minutes, 56 seconds on the course that began at Dodger Stadium, and passed through downtown LA, Hollywood, Beverly Hills and Brentwood before finishing in the Century City district.
Kenya's Atanas Kioko came in second with 2:10.55. Kenya's Moses Kurgat came in third place with 2:13.13.
It was just Richman's second marathon, finishing fourth in the 2:10.47 hour after debuting at Twin Cities Marathon last fall.
“I really didn't have any big plans for this. The marathon is always very tough. “I just told the pack to stay on the way in the middle and if I was feeling good, I could make the move. I ended up going to lead and no one came with me.”
Richman of Elvern, Illinois is a member of the Montana cross-country team and earned national honors as a junior in 2022-23.
American Paul Pilkington won the 1994 edition with 2:12.13.
In the women's race, Ethiopian Tehnesh True won the title at 2:30.16.
Kenya's Antonina Kwanbai came in second place with 2:30.19. Savannabury in Orem, Utah came in third at 2:30.31.
Berry finished 12th in last year's US Olympic trial.
