The teenage driver admitted to causing the deaths of three passengers who died in a crash in Warwickshire five weeks after passing the driver's license exam.
Police said the Edward Spencer incident had “devastating consequences” that could occur if the car was inadvertently driven.
Spencer, 19, pleaded guilty at Warwick Crown Court on Monday on three counts that caused deaths from careless driving that caused careless driving in an April 2023 crash between Campden and Shipston-on-Stour.
Warwickshire police said Spencer lost control of his Ford Fiesta on B4035 Campden Road on his way home from school. Harry Purcell, 17, Tilly Sekocom, 16, and 16-year-old Frank Warmaldo, 16, died as a result of injuries to fellow students at Chipping Campden School in Gloucestershire, who were passengers in Spencer's car.
A woman and two young children who were traveling in another car were seriously injured and are being treated for life-changing injuries.
Michael Huntley of Warwickshire Police encouraged young people and their parents to consider the limitations of being a newly qualified driver. He added: “Drivers need to be aware of the catastrophic consequences that can occur if the vehicle is inadvertently driven.
“Edward Spencer only passed the test five weeks before the crash, and his careless behavior has taken the lives of three young people traveling his car. Driving requires judgment and care. As this tragic case shows, the outcome of careless driving can be devastating.
“Many lives have been ruined by this horrific incident. We can't imagine the pain it caused. Our thoughts remain in the affected individuals and families.”
Spencer will be granted bail and will be sentenced on April 28th.
