‘Queer community’ outraged at video of trans person bloodied during arrest; Austin city council members demand investigation

A controversy broke out in Austin, Texas after video footage from police Arrest Transgender people have spread over accusations of police brutality.

A statement from the Austin Police Department allegedly resulted in the transgender person being intentionally dropped to the ground and hitting his face on the ground. Austin City Council members are calling for an investigation into police actions.

“Subject went to the ground on his lap and placed his face on the ground.”

Police said when the incident unfolded on March 2, officers observed a “disability” in a downtown crowd around 2:30am, a “drunk person” in a “black dress” who was trying to engage in a physical conflict with a pedestrian.

After police blew whi on obstruction, the crowd began to disperse, but they arrested the trans person as they allegedly attacked them twice with closed fists.

Transgender activists have accused police of prejudice and atrocities, while blue advocates say they attacked themselves while allegedly drunk suspects attempted to resist arrest.

“The officer grabbed the subject's left arm and tried to turn the subject by pulling the subject back. When the officer pulled the subject's arm, the subject went to the ground on his lap and hit his face on the ground,” read the APD statement.

Police said the subject was detained, evaluated by EMS and arrested for disorderly conduct related to the battle.

City Council members expressed concern over the incident.

“I am deeply interested in the troublesome reporting of unacceptable interactions between the city of Austin and the LGBTQIA+ community. Many constituents and community leaders have reached out to our office,” Zohaib Qadri said. “Austin must be a safe haven for everyone. Our strange community deserves city leaders who continue to promote accountability and action.”

Mayor Protem and other city council members have issued joint statements.

“We've seen the upset video shared online and on March 2, showing that a trans woman is being threw violently on the pavement by an Austin police officer,” the statement read.

“We have taken steps to ensure that this excessive use of force is properly investigated and that appropriate measures are taken to ensure accountability,” they added. “When our LGBTQIA+ community is under constant attack by domestic and state governments, we must do everything we can as a city to ensure that all members of our community are safe.”
