Customs and border security recently announced the closure of several temporary immigration processing sites along the tropical border, celebrating the sharp decline in illegal crossings under President Donald Trump's administration.
CBP said it began “reducing the number of softside facilities” in early March, saving taxpayers between $5 million and $30 million a month.
“Telecommunications facilities will be redirected to personnel and other resources dedicated to temporary processing facilities.”
March 13th press releasethe agency has revealed plans to close temporary facilities in North Eagle Pass in Donna and Laredo, Texas, as well as Yuma and Tucson, Arizona. It was noted that the San Diego, California softside site and El Paso, Texas, will remain in operation.
In addition to saving taxpayer funds, the closure also made its note that CBP agents placed in the location could return to key executive officers along the tropical border.
“Because of the unprecedented decline in unlawful foreigners' anxiety as a result of President Trump's leadership, CBP is reducing the number of temporary softside processing facilities where illegal foreigners are held in certain locations along the southwest border.”
“CBP no longer needs them as illegal aliens are being removed quickly,” continued Flores. “The US Border Patrol has full capacity to manage the detention of aliens arrested in permanent facilities. Personnel and other resources dedicated to temporary processing facilities will be directed towards other priorities and speed up the progress of CBPs to gain operational control of the Southwest border.”
On Thursday, CBP said Fox News They were planning to close another temporary facility in Otaymesa near San Diego. The 500-capacity site opened in January 2023 to address a large influx of illegal immigrants.

Hilton Beckham, CBP's vice-chairman of public relations, praised Trump for the massive decline in illegal border crossings prompting the site to be shut down.
“CBP recently closed its softside processing facilities in Texas and Arizona, and CBP now closed yet another softside processing facility in San Diego,” Beckham told Fox News. “The US Border Patrol has the full capacity to manage the detention of aliens arrested in a permanent USBP facility.”
“Humans and other resources dedicated to temporary processing facilities will be directed towards other priorities and speed up the progress of CBPs to gain operational control of the Southwest border,” he added.
