On January 6, 2021, President Trump voiced his support for compensation for individuals who received pardons earlier this year related to the Capitol incident.
“Since they lost jobs and income – are conversations about various compensation funds happening?” Newsmax's Greg Kelly inquired during an interview broadcast Tuesday.
“Well, there’s an interesting aspect to that,” Trump responded to the host. “Many people… a large number in the government are discussing it… because… because… I really appreciate that group of individuals.”
“As far as I’m concerned, they were patriots,” he added in the segment, which was highlighted by media outlets.
This interaction follows the president granting widespread pardons to nearly all charged with rebellion shortly after returning to the White House. Trump’s act of kindness towards around 1,500 individuals, including those found guilty of violence, helped him to honor his enduring campaign commitments.
“What happened to these individuals is shocking,” Trump remarked in January.
In his recent conversation, the president referred to those charged on January 6 as “remarkable individuals.”
“They faced severe injustice and mistreatment,” Trump told Newsmax. “Some of them didn’t even go inside the building.”
The public reaction following the pardons indicated that a significant number of Americans disapproved of Trump’s choice to extend leniency to violent groups. Roughly 600 accused individuals are charged with assault, resistance, or obstruction, with 10 already convicted of incitement.
The president recently referenced the use of an autopen for President Biden’s last-minute pardons, along with pardons for families and lawmakers involved in a congressional panel investigating the January 6th events.
“The ‘pardon’ issued by sleepy Joe Biden to the non-selection committee of political criminals has been rendered null, void, and without further effect because they were executed by an autopen,” he stated last week.
