Social security admin partially walks back plans for ID verification, cutting phone services

The Social Security Administration said Wednesday it would change the proposed new policy by mentioning the direct requirements for verifying the identity of account holders with disability insurance, Medicare and SSI applications.

“We are hearing from our customers, councils, supporters and more, and are updating our policies to provide better customer service to the nation's most vulnerable groups.”

“In addition to extending the effective date of the policy for two weeks, we also ensure that employees receive the training necessary to assist customers, Medicare, disability, and SSI applications, face-to-face proof of identity is exempt as multiple opportunities exist during the decision process to verify an individual's identity.”

According to a Wednesday announcement, starting April 14, those who cannot use an online social security account can complete their bill by phone without having to enter the office.

Retirement, Survivor or Assistance (spouse or child) benefits applications require face-to-face visits to applications that cannot be verified through the Social Security website platform.

“SSA will implement online digital ID proof or face-to-face identity proof for these cases. The agency will not enforce these requirements in extreme harsh circumstances, such as terminal cases and pre-release scenarios for prisoners,” Wednesday said. press release.

“SSA is currently developing a process that requires documentation and administrative approval to bypass policies in cases of disastrous needs like these.”

The updated policy will alleviate concerns for rural communities and individuals who need accessibility assistance who are concerned about their ability to receive services under a previously face-to-face proof of personal information proxy.

The agency says it will continue to monitor and will adjust to pay the right people in the right amount if necessary to protect the benefits and programs of managing it.
