President Donald Trump called for the UN ambassador on Thursday.
Trump remains with Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), one of Trump's top allies. Posted A true society.
“As we move forward with America's first agenda, it's essential to maintain all Republican seats in Congress,” Trump said. House Republicans currently have almost a majority of 218-213 seats.
“We must be united to achieve our mission. Elise Stefanik was an important part of our efforts from the beginning,” Trump continued. “As one of my biggest allies, I asked Elise to stay in Parliament, document historic tax cuts, great work, economic growth, and provide safe borders, energy control, peace through power.
The Senate confirmation of Stephanik was postponed until the April 1 special election in Florida, replacing former Michael Waltz and Matt Gates officials, where Republicans are expected to win two more votes in the House. Her appointment was expected to sail through the Senate as she moved forward.
Trump remains in the GOP column, the importance of ensuring Stefanik's seat, although relatively safe for the Republicans. He also said that Stefanik would rejoin the family leadership, but that is not clear in any capacity.
Rep. Lisa McClain (R-MI) was elected in late 2024 to replace Stefanik as chairman of the House Republican Conference.
“It's a very tough majority and I don't want to get a chance from the others running in Elise's seat,” Trump said. “People love Elise and with her we have nothing to worry about coming on Election Day.”
He said, “There are others who can do a good job at the UN. So Elise will remain in Congress, rejoin the House leadership team and continue to fight for our incredible Americans. Johnson Speaker is excited!”
Trump also showed Stefanik would join his administration at some point, but it is not clear which ability or what he will be appointed as the UN ambassador.
“I look forward to the day Elise will be able to join my administration in the future,” he said. “She's absolutely amazing. Thank you Elise!”
Governor Cathy. Hochul (D-ny) has the authority to set up special elections to replace Stefanik, but she was expected to set an election date as late as possible to deny the district's vote.
