50 percent of parents financially supporting adult children: Survey

New research shows that even when children are out of the nest, some parents still contribute to their child's livelihood.

The average amount given to adult children among those surveyed was $1,474 a month, up 6% from a similar survey conducted in 2023.

Of those contributing, 83% help pay for grocery, 65% help with mobile phone billing, and 46% help with vacation per data.

“The average contribution to millennials has decreased slightly, but the overall average has been higher due to a significant increase in ZERS support across generations,” the study states.

Among parents who are still in the workforce, they contribute 2.3 times more to their child's lifestyle (average $1,589) than their monthly retirement savings donation ($673).

“We have seen it in recent years. The ongoing need to financially support struggling adult children places a significant burden on the financial security of many parents,” says Beth Kronpayabal, the study's lead author. release.

The survey was conducted in February 2025 among 1,001 US parents.
